Ceramic window tinting vs. Legacy tint
Window tinting had changed little since it was widely introduced in the 1960's, most of the window tinting products consisted of metallicized or dyed materials in order to capitalize on the benefits that window tinting had to offer for homes, cars, and buildings.
Recently, new products have become available - albeit at a high price point. It is critical to find out the pros and cons between these new and old products to figure out which window tint product is best suited for your budget and application needs. We will dive in to the details in this post and discover the differences between the new ceramic window tint options and the tradition dyed window tints.
Main Differences with regards to Ceramic Window
First, it's important to know the basic methods by which these products are manufactured. Once we've established that we will list the benefits and drawbacks of regular window tint vs. the newer ceramic options. Keep in mind though it's always best to consult a certified and experienced window tint installer who can give a detailed explanation on what choice of window tint makes the most sense for you and your needs.
Standard Window Tint
Standard window tinting (film) is used for privacy as well as protecting your vehicle or home form the sun’s harmful UV rays. Very thin polyester sheets or laminate can be dyed to specific tint gradients ranging from very light to nearly complete dark. Most of these are made from black, brown, or gray but some also include colored variations known as mirrored tint.
These window tinting films do offer some degree of protection from the suns UV rays much the same way sunglasses do, some UV light still enters the interior of your car, home or business and will increase the inside temperatures. In order to prevent scratching of the delicate films they are covered with an anti-scratch coating. While this does a good job protection the films, once they have been compromised by a sharp object (keys, buttons or zippers, even rings worn on your fingers) it doesn't take long before the scratch goes completely through to the window and peeling and flaking will occur.
These anti-scratch coatings have improved over time with more advanced manufacturing techniques, the filmed application of window tinting will always suffer to some degree to these scratching problems.
Something that most people are not aware of is that while adding window tint to your car, home or business will certainly lower the interior temperature by blocking most of the suns UV light - tinting products actually increase the thermal stress that is experienced by the glass products to which they are applied. This makes it imperative to use window tinting products that are approved by the glass manufacturer. Failing to adhere to these guidelines can void the warranty from the manufacturer if tinting related damage occurs to the windows or glass.
Basically when it comes down to cost, traditional film tinting is the most affordable route although we must bear in mind that it is not the most durable option available. There's a good chance that you'll have to re-tint overtime if the window tint becomes scratched or torn.
Now however there is a new and highly durable option available to us that while more costly initially, can actually save money in the long term by only requiring one application.
Ceramic Window Tint
Ceramic window tinting film has a few more desirable qualities than our traditional products. Ceramic tinting is a top of the line option when it comes to tinting your windows, whether they be at your business, home, or vehicle. Ceramic window tinting uses the same layered film as legacy tints, however they are then coated with ceramic particles utilizing Nano-ceramics technology.
Ceramic Nano-particles reflect more of the suns UV light and glare, and more heat than tradition window tint. As with legacy window tinting films, you have the option of choosing whatever shade of tint is best for your privacy and security. Another added benefit is that ceramic window tint films do not use metal as is the case with older metallic based window films. Ceramic window tint will also not interfere with cellular or Wi-Fi signals that have become more commonplace in newer vehicles.
Many studies have been compiled on the benefits of ceramic tint vs. legacy window tinting and has been found to outperform in these key areas;
UV light reflection
Heat Absorption thereby reducing solar heat gained
Infrared light rejection
Structural Stability
It is the inherent structural stability of ceramic window tinting that makes it far less likely to tear, nick or scratch. It also reduces the likelihood of a window shattering which is a great asset in a vehicle, business or residential setting.
